Respiratory failure
Respiratory failure is the inability of the respiratory system to supply sufficient oxygen (gas exchange disturbance) and / or to effectively remove carbon dioxide (ventilation disturbance), resulting in low oxygen saturation and / or high carbon dioxide level in blood, the patient may be obstructive or restrictive.
Symptoms of respiratory failure
Respiratory failure is accompanied by a number of symptoms including:
# Rapid breathing or shortness of breath
#Confusion or change in level of consciousness
#Fatigue
#Irregular heart rate
Treatment
The Ventilation machine may be (Bi-Level machine (BiPAP) or portable ventilator) provides gentle air pressure to mechanically assist or replace spontaneous breathing.
There are two main types of ventilation therapy:
- Non-Invasive,
where air is delivered via a mask.
- Invasive, which requires a tracheostomy and air is delivered via expiratory valve.
